From some years, Egypt has taken the road to energy independence.
Following the development of some market sectors, such as transport, industry and vehicle sales, the energy consumption in Egypt has significantly increased: according to the World Oil and Gas Review 2017, oil consumption reached 880 thousand barrels/day, while gas consumption reached 53.47 billion cubic meters/year.
In this scenario, the role of natural gas, used to produce 70% of the country’s electricity, is strengthening thanks to the discovery offshore in Egypt, in 2016, of a huge natural gas deposit: the Zohr field.
The exploitation of this field of 850 billion of cubic meters of gas is going to give a significant boost to the Egyptian energy independence. And that happened with a record-breaking timing, from discovery to exploitation.
In 2018 Cannon Artes completed the hand-over and start-up of five different supplies employed in Zohr’s exploitation project: since 2016 till now, the company has provided two thermophysical deaerator based on ZeroGas® proprietary technology, two cooling water filtration systems and a biological waste water treatment plant.

This latest, utilises the Biological Membrane Reactor technology (MBR) to treat the sanitary waste water coming from the onshore installations, in order to prevent the possible spreading of waterborne infectious diseases, and to reduce the wastewater impact on the environment.
Untreated sanitary water analyses recorded a concentration of Biological Oxigen (BOD) and suspended solids (TSS) equal to 400 ppm, and of Chemical Oxigen (COD) of 800 ppm.
Thanks to the use of Cannon Artes Membrane Bio-Reactor (MBR) technology, which uses a bio-reactor integrated with ultrafiltration membranes and combines clarification, aeration and filtration processes, the output water, BOD, COD and Suspended Solids (TSS) values are cut down.
In this particular case, the water thus treated, presents the following parameters:
BOD | < 20 |
COD | < 40 |
Suspended Solids | < 20 |
Total Coliform (MPN/100ml) | < 100 |
According to the above conditions the sanitary water, after being treated, is reused and employed for irrigation within the onshore facilities.
